Organization & Scholarship Overview:
NAHJ has awarded more than $1.7 million in scholarships to nearly 800 students since the program began in 1988. NAHJ scholarship opportunities are open to college-bound high school seniors, college undergraduates and graduate students pursuing careers in English or Spanish-language print, broadcast, digital or photojournalism. Students attending four-year colleges and community colleges in the Unites States and Puerto Rico with a GPA of 3.0 or better are eligible for the scholarships, with amounts ranging from $1,500 – $10,000.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 or better
  • Students attending four-year colleges and community colleges in the United States and Puerto Rico
  • Must pursue a career in English or Spanish-language print, broadcast, digital or photojournalism

The deadline to submit an NAHJ scholarship application is February 21, 2020. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Facebook Journalism Project NAHJ Scholarship – $10,000
This scholarship is an effort to support the future generation of journalists who will play an important role in building an informed community. Students who are pursuing a career in journalism, with a commitment to digital storytelling, will be chosen. Students must be juniors, seniors or graduate students currently enrolled at an accredited college or university in the U.S.

NAHJ General Scholarships – Rubén Salazar Scholarship Fund* – $2,000
The NAHJ Rubén Salazar Scholarship Fund was established in 1986 to assist young Latino journalists. The scholarship fund is named after Mexican-American journalist Rubén Salazar who was a columnist for the Los Angeles Times and the news director for the Spanish-language television station KMEX.

NAHJ María Elena Salinas Scholarship – $2,500
Established in 2002, this program awards scholarships to students who demonstrate a strong desire to pursue a career as a Spanish-language journalist. It is made possible through a donation from Univision network news anchor, and NAHJ founding member María Elena Salinas. (Students applying for this scholarship must submit their essay in Spanish)

NAHJ Ana Real Scholarship – $2,500
This is the inaugural year for the Ana Real Scholarship. CBS News created the scholarship to honor Real, an award-winning journalist who passed away in 2019. Ana was the foreign editor for several CBS News platforms, a long-time NAHJ member who also served as President of the New York chapter. This scholarship is intended for a student interested in working behind the scenes in broadcast journalism (ex. producer, editor).

NAHJ Cecilia Alvear Scholarship – $2,500
This scholarship is named for the former NAHJ president who passed away in 2017. It was made possible through a gift from George Lewis, a journalist who worked for NBC News for 43 years and was Alvear’s partner for 23 years. Alvear was a producer at NBC for 25 years and fought for the inclusion of Latinos in newsrooms. This scholarship is intended for a producer.

NAHJ Luis Gómez Scholarship – $2,000
Univision has established a $2,000 scholarship in the name of Luis Gómez, an Emmy award-winning anchor and reporter who worked for Univision New York. Gómez, who succumbed to cancer in 2018, became an advocate for cancer prevention and awareness in the Latino community, after he was diagnosed in 2017. NAHJ Jonathan Camuy Scholarship – $1,500
This scholarship is presented to a student studying Spanish-language journalism. It is named in memory of Jonathan Camuy, an NAHJ member, Telemundo employee, and victim of the Pulse Nightclub shooting. (Students applying for this scholarship must submit their essay in Spanish)
