Dr. Yvonne Lee Wilson Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship Overview:
To honor the legacy of Dr. Yvonne Lee Wilson and her work with the Far South Community Action Council (CAC), this one-time scholarship will be offered to a Chicago Public Schools high school senior who demonstrates exemplary community service and resides in the far south side region of Chicago.

Dr. Yvonne Wilson served as the Vice Chair of the Far South CAC since its inception in 2014 as well as Senior Pastor of Body of Christ Deliverance Ministries in West Pullman. Alderman Carrie Austin introduced a resolution in 2013 to Chicago’s City Council honoring her work and support for the families in the West Pullman area. Dr. Wilson was a life coach and the author of books including The Rise and Fall of Women in the Ministry, book and journal, and 365-Days Devotional Journal for Prayers and Intercessors. She also worked with the CPS Chicago Connected initiative to help families get internet access for remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. She was a long-time staff member of Phalanx Family Services before retiring and was married for over 34 years with 2 daughters, 8 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.

Recipient Selection & Eligibility Requirements:
The one-time recipient of the Dr. Yvonne Lee Wilson Memorial Scholarship will be selected by a voluntary committee of stakeholders which can include but is not limited to teachers, administrators and members of the Chicago Public Schools community.

The recipient must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be a graduating CPS senior who plans to enroll at a 2- or 4-year college/university in the fall of 2022.
  • Must reside in the far south side region of Chicago (Zip codes: 60617; 60619; 60627; 60628; 60633; 60643; 60649; 60655; 60827).
  • Must have completed your service learning requirement.
  • Must answer the essay question: What makes you a leader in your community? What have you done in service of your community? Describe how your future academic and career goals will impact your community. Please include your academic, career, and personal goals. Include any leadership, extracurricular, and VOLUNTEER activities (1,200 words maximum)
