Gread "Lefty" McKinnis Memorial Scholarship

Organization & Scholarship Overview:
The Gread “Lefty” McKinnis Memorial Foundation (GLMMF) was established in 2005. GLMMF is dedicated in memory of former Negro League pitcher, Gread “Lefty” McKinnis. GLMMF is a non-profit 501©3 corporation established to promote and extend the spirit of love, by aiding, building and uplifting the underprivileged through the gift of giving. GLMMF provides financial assistance to high school seniors who are admitted to an accredited two or four-year college or university. Specifically, the fund provides male African American high school seniors with assistance in pursuing higher education. Each year, the Foundation awards at least one college scholarship to a graduating senior at a school of need.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Current High School Senior (class of 2024)
  • African American Male
  • US Citizenship – Chicagoland area
  • Admitted to and attending a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited 2 or 4-year college or university in the fall
  • Attendance at Scholarship Presentation Event (June 2023)

Other Items Needed:

  1. Current Clear Color Headshot
  2. Official Student Transcript
  3. College Acceptance Letter
  4. Community or Civic Involvement (community service)
  5. Personal Statements – 100 words minimum for each questions
  6. Two (2) letters of recommendation; 1st from teacher or high school counselor, and 2nd from community/civic or church leader
    Letters of Recommendation must be signed and include:
    (a) Relationship to Applicant
    (b) Number of years’ known
  7. Interview with Scholarship Committee (you are required to appear before the committee for an interview) (April-May 2023)

  4. Please upload your college letter of acceptance OR proof of applying. The letter of acceptance or proof must come from a regionally accredited two or four-year institution of higher learning.
  5. In order of preference, list all colleges or universities to which you have applied or intend to apply for admission. State whether your application has been accepted, rejected, or is pending.
  6. You are required to list your work history (if applicable) as well as involvement in extra-curricular activities; community service, and awards and honors received.
  7. Essay 1 of 3: What is your desired major in college and explain your goals upon completion or college? (100 words minimum)
  8. Essay 2 of 3: Explain any obstacles you have overcome in your life and how this has made an impact on your life? (100 words minimum)
  9. Essay 3 of 3: What are your achievements, skills and participation in any extra curricular activities, community and/or civic involvement that have made you a good candidate for this scholarship? (100 words minimum)
  10. Parents (check appropriate one)
  11. If I am selected as a semi-finalist, I agree to participate in a mandatory interview in the month of May.
  12. Please upload a color, head shot photo (graduation photo or school day photos are acceptable). This photo will be used in promotional material and should be appropriate for sharing.
