WTS Transportation YOU High School Scholarship

Organization & Scholarship Description:
WTS fosters the development of women and girls in the transportation field by encouraging bright new professionals and students to undertake careers in the area of transportation. Transportation YOU is a hands-on, interactive, mentoring program that offers young girls ages 13-18 an introduction to a wide variety of transportation careers. Transportation YOU High School Scholarship is awarded to girls pursuing high school studies in science, technology, engineering, and math.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicant must be a female high school senior attending a CPS school (or school in the Chicagoland area.)
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher (unweighted)
  • Currently studying math, science, and technology,
  • Considering a career in a transportation-related field

Application Requirements

  1. Official High School Transcript
  2. One (1) letter of recommendation from a Teacher and/or Counselor
  3. Student must submit a completed application via CPS Academic Works.
  4. Statement of interest – this is different from and in addition to the personal statement: There are many types of transportation, including walking, bicycles, buses, boats, trains, automobiles and aircraft. Just about everything and everyone moves at some point- food travels from farm to market, and people travel for work, recreation and vacation. Parts for electronics and other consumer goods are shipped from all over the world and assembled in a plant (before being shipped further to a consumer). Within all these transport modes and businesses there are many different kinds of facilities, operations and objectives.
    Briefly (200-500 words) respond to ONE of the following two prompts:
    (a) Is there a particular area of transportation described in the above paragraph that interests you, and why?
    (b) Describe a transportation problem that you’ve observed in your community or anywhere in the world. Why is this a problem? What is a possible solution?
  5. Personal Statement: A statement about your goals to pursue studies in STEM areas (science, technology, engineering, or math) while in college and why you think that you should receive the scholarship award. Statement should not exceed 500 words.

Renewable: No, but students who have applied or received this scholarship in the past can apply again for consideration.
