Mary E. Smith Foundation - Excellence in Science & Medicine Award

Scholarship Overview:
This one-time scholarship, in an amount up to $2,500, will be awarded to one or two (2) successful candidates annually. Candidates must also be US residents who are entering or currently enrolled in an advanced educational program within health care sciences (including biology, chemistry, nursing, etc.) trending towards the medical field or medical research. The scholarship is designed to encourage students to explore and enter the field of neurology or oncology in hopes of finding a future cure for brain tumors/cancers. Applicants are encouraged to simultaneously apply for the Karen Lewis CPS-CTU Excellence in Science Award. Amount of award will be paid directly to the student’s school if for tuition, or directly to the recipient to assist with living expenses, books, travel, etc.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • High school senior (class of 2023)
  • Must have a weighted GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or 4.0 on a 5.0 scale
  • Rank in the top half of class and have at least an SAT score of 1000 OR ACT of 21
  • Must have three (3) years of science courses with a minimum grade letter of B in each course
  • Must be entering or currently enrolled in an advanced educational program pursuing an associate or bachelor level degree; with an emphasis in science and/or prevention and research in the areas of neuro-oncology (including neuroscience, neurosurgery, and neuropathology) within the fifty United States or District of Columbia

  1. Completed application packet
  2. Essay response (1,500 words max) to the following question: “May E. Smith (M.O.M.) Foundation, Inc./Memories of Mary has taken positive stands on important issues affecting the community and takes pride in working for the betterment of all people. Select a current issue important to you and discuss how your education will allow you to make an impact on that issue.”
  3. One (1) letter of recommendation provided by your School Counselor, Principal, Professor/Teacher or President/Dean of College
